Commissioning a Woodturned Piece

Below are some points for you to consider in the initial stages of designing your piece.

 

Points to note:

Because the majority of these wood turned items are made from timber that is not available off the shelf, sufficient time needs to be allowed for the timber to be found and dried. Of course if you already have the timber i.e.. You have just had an old tree felled and would like something made from it, then this time can be reduced.

Timber is a fantastic sustainable resource that we can use, but remember it takes a great deal of careful handling and storage in order to make an item from it that is not going to crack or split in our modern centrally heated homes.

Because of the methods I use, this normally enables me to make turnings from large single sections of timber with very little degrade in the finished item.
Sometimes it is necessary to glue smaller sections of kiln dried timber together in order to achieve the look and quality of the finished item.
This of course will always be discussed and agreed upon with the client in the initial brief.
