MEASURING AN EXISTING NEWEL Page 1b

 Tools needed:
Set of dividers
Set of calipers (external) or vernier calipers
Ruler or steel rule

Dividers:
These are used to take the distance measurements i.e. width of beads, fillets, coves, flats, hollows etc.
Set the gap of the dividers, so that the points are inline with the start and end of the feature that you are measuring. Then measure the gap in millimetres. Note this onto the distance side of your drawing. Then take the next distance until done.

NOTE: .It is usually easier to take the distance measurement first, add this to your drawing then, take its corresponding diameter measurement and add this to the diameter side of your drawing. Carry on this way until the measuring is complete.

Calipers: (external)
These are used to take diameter measurements of beads, fillets, coves, flats, hollows etc. Set the gap so that the legs of the calipers just slide over the feature being measured. Then remove the callipers and measure the gap in millimetres. Note this measurement onto your drawing. Then take the next diameter until done.

Vernier calipers:
These can be used instead of a normal pair of calipers, and will speed up the measuring process.

When measuring the diameter of a particular feature, make sure that it is measured at its widest part. This is at the centre line of the round section.
